How to choose a rowing machine
- Water, air or magneticWater is smooth and quiet. Air gets harder the harder you pull and suits intervals. Magnetic is the quietest and lets you set an exact level.
- SpaceRowers are long: about 2.2–2.5 m. Allow room behind the seat and to the sides to get on and off.
- StorageIf floor space is shared, pick one that folds or stands upright when you're done.
- Maximum user weightChoose a rating at least 20 kg above the heaviest rower. Gyms should look for 150–180 kg.
- Console and appsA basic monitor shows time, distance, strokes and calories. Bluetooth and ANT+ connect heart-rate straps and training apps.
- NoiseAir rowers move air and make a whoosh. In apartments and shared spaces, water or magnetic is kinder to the neighbours.

Is a water or an air rower better?
For quiet home rowing, a water rower feels smooth and natural. For intervals, CrossFit-style workouts and gyms, an air rower responds instantly to effort. Both give a full-body, low-impact workout.
What does a rowing machine work?
Rowing works your legs, glutes, core, back and arms in every stroke, while keeping impact off your joints.
How much space does a rowing machine need?
Most rowers are 2.2–2.5 m long and about 0.5–0.7 m wide. Allow extra room around them, and choose a folding or upright-storing rower if space is shared.
Which rower is best for a commercial gym?

Can I connect a rowing machine to apps?
