How to choose a spinning bike
- ResistanceMagnetic resistance is quiet and doesn't wear. Friction pads are cheaper and feel more direct but need replacing over time.
- FlywheelA heavier flywheel (18–23 kg) carries momentum for a smoother, road-like ride. Lighter rear flywheels on electromagnetic bikes rely on the resistance system for feel.
- Maximum user weightPick a rating at least 20 kg above the heaviest rider. Studios should look for 150 kg or more.
- FitCheck that the saddle moves up, down, forward and back, and that the handlebars adjust, so every rider can set up properly.
- Console and appsA console tracks time, speed, distance and calories. For Zwift or Kinomap, choose a bike that connects over Bluetooth, like the Shua V9.
- SpaceMost spinning bikes need about 1.4 × 0.6 m of floor, plus room to get on and off.
Spinning bike questions
What is the difference between a spinning bike and an exercise bike?
A spinning bike has a heavy flywheel and a road-bike riding position, so you can stand, sprint and climb like in a cycling class. An upright or recumbent exercise bike has a more relaxed position and is usually controlled from a console. See our exercise bikes for those.
What is the best spinning bike for home?
For one or two riders, the Shua Home Spinning Bike is compact and quiet with 32 resistance levels. If heavier riders will use it or you want a smoother ride, step up to a commercial bike with an 18–23 kg flywheel and a 150 kg rating.
Is a heavier flywheel better?
On a traditional spinning bike, yes: a heavier flywheel keeps its momentum for a smoother pedal stroke. Electromagnetic bikes like the Shua V9 use a lighter rear flywheel and control the feel with the resistance system.
Can I use Zwift on a spinning bike?
Yes, on the Shua V9, which is compatible with Zwift and Kinomap and supports Bluetooth heart-rate monitors (sold separately).
Are the pre-owned Matrix bikes reliable?
Each pre-owned unit is inspected and tested for function before sale. They may show cosmetic signs of use. Stock is limited and sold first come, first served.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can choose Payflex, Float or Mobicred at checkout, subject to their approval. See our finance page for details.
Can I try a spinning bike before I buy?
